Medicare Supplement Insurance is supplemental insurance that helps fill “gaps” in Original Medicare. It is sold by private companies, and it can be a great way to cover your medical expenses.
The original Medicare program does not cover everything, which means you may end up paying for some of your medical care out of pocket. But with Medicare Supplement Insurance, you’ll have more coverage and less worry about how to pay for the things that aren’t covered by Original Medicare.*

Learn More About Medicare Supplement Plans
What does Medigap typically cover?
Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) is a type of insurance policy that helps pay for some of the health care costs that Medicare doesn’t cover.
There are many different types of supplemental insurance, and each plan has its own benefits and exclusions. The plans also have different deductibles, copayments, coinsurance and out-of-pocket expenses.
Medicare Supplement Insurance policies are standardized by state law. They must cover the same benefits as Original Medicare Parts A & B, but they can cover additional services not covered by Medicare.
When you enroll in a Medigap plan, you receive an ID card that you present whenever you receive care at a health care facility or provider office.
Is a Medigap plan right for you?
If you have Original Medicare, you might want to consider purchasing a Medigap policy. Medigap policies can help cover some of the costs that Original Medicare doesn’t cover, like copayments and coinsurance.
Some Medigap policies also cover services that Original Medicare doesn’t cover, like medical care when you travel outside the U.S. If you have Original Medicare and you buy a Medigap policy, here’s what happens:
- You’ll still have your Medicare card and your Medicare number.
- You will have to pay monthly premiums for your Medigap policy. These premiums are not included in your monthly Part B premium or Part D prescription drug premium.
